have to say about AFTH? ANY horse can win...here's how it works! Stage 1 - Attend an Audition near you! When? April 9 - April 24, 2011. Entries are limited! You will be assigned your audition location and time when you submit your entry. Reservations are considered according to space availability in your region and in your age division. Where? ACTHA will come to you. Thanks to the hundreds and hundreds of entries already received, the following locations have been finalized.
Why? Its purpose is to bring attention to the Great American Trail Horse that has served this country so magnificently. It is our sincere hope that this effort will cause many to get back in the saddle again and rescue horses in need of a home. How? About 100 horses will be selected as finalists from the regional auditions. They will be represented from 2 age divisions, over 45 and under 45 (must be at least 21 on the day of the audition). Each region will be amply represented in the national finals with a minimum of 10 finalists AND UP TO 20 selected from each region ! Remember, it's America's "Favorite" Trail Horse, not America's "Best" Trail Horse! During your exciting audition you will be interviewed and perform 4 ACTHA approved fun obstacles! We will be looking for things such as horse personality, finesse, cadence, and athleticism. You will be asked to perform the following 4 obstacles at your audition: From the Start Cone, you will pick up a working trot. Soon you will come to a set of poles simulating dead fall on trail. They will be spaced irregularly to test your horse's ability to rate cadence. Do not break gait through the poles, you should maintain a working trot throughout the deadfall. Upon exiting the dead fall you will still be trotting and will come to another pole. Halt your horse over this pole, so that your horse's belly is over the pole with his front feet on one side and his hind feet on the trailing side. After a complete stop you will side pass to your right (the off side) and clear the pole and proceed to the figure 8 obstacle. You are to stop between the markers and back your horse in a complete figure 8 around the 2 markers. Upon completion you will trot to the finish Cone to complete your obstacles, do not break gait into a canter. Your obstacle time will Stop here. You will then have an optional 45 second freestyle performance in the arena area. You will be notified when the freestyle begins and ends. You may showcase your horse in any way you would like within the 45 seconds. You may use the existing obstacles in your freestyle time, but adding other props to the arena will not be allowed. A lariat rope is permitted to be carried by a rider as a trail tool, and can be used in freestyle time, however firearms of any kind will not be allowed. Other horses or riders to assist you in the arena will not be allowed. You will need to showcase your horse with your existing tack. Riding bridleless will not be allowed. A Slicker is considered a trail item and may be worn in the audition and used in the freestyle time. A rider may drop their reins to show communication with their horse during the freestyle time, but a horse must remain bridled and their reins must lay on the horses neck at all times throughout the audition.
Cost? The cost for an audition is $149* There are no additional entry fees for those moving on to stage 2. (Those needing financial assistance to make the trip to the national finals will have the opportunity to request help.) Make your horse a Star! Win, lose, or draw horses and riders will be viewed on hours of national network TV. America's Favorite Trail Horse will be aired on Dish Network and Cable. (Direct TV in the works!).
