Our Cause.
Full Equine Employment to help ease the suffering of horses in need.
Whether this is accomplished via fund raising, contributions, Saddle Clubs making money to remain viable, or an individual profiting from a ride so they can feed their horse, it benefits our wonderful horses. Thanks to our wonderful members, ride hosts, and sponsors, ACTHA is able to facilitate donations to many charities, organizations, and non-profits (Over $500,000 so far).... but it's 'the Cause' that is our driving force!

At this time we are caring for eight gorgeous horses who had very uncertain futures prior to coming "home" to Adopted Acres. | Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue Since its inception in April 2006, Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue (ATBR) has rescued more than 100 horses directly from auction houses such as New Holland, PA, where they are destined for slaughter. Many other horses have been shipped to Akindale from national organizations such as TRF and Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue because ATBR provides safe haven for horses that can no longer race, are still in their prime, and are ready for new careers or to be companion animals.
Located on 1000 acres of pristine land in Pawling, NY, Akindale was founded by John Hettinger, a respected businessman and philanthropist. Mr. Hettinger had long been a leading force in the on-going battle to end horse slaughter in the United States. As a life-long thoroughbred owner and breeder, Mr. Hettinger had a vision of keeping these magnificent animals, who have given so much to so many, from a hard and cruel fate. He fought daily to have the necessary bills passed into law, making illegal the slaughter of horses as well as the inhumane transportation of horses bound for slaughter over the US borders into Canada and Mexico. His property was deeded in perpetuity, to provide for the ongoing care of these horses.
Akindale is a nationally recognized name, synonymous with the cause. While in the past ATBR has made valuable contributions in saving many thoroughbreds, there are so many more still needing to be rescued.
In order to fulfill its mission of “providing a safe haven for thoroughbreds no longer able to race”, the ATBR has expanded its goals. Realizing that more horses need to be responsibly adopted to private owners, so more can be taken in, our "Reinventing Racehorses" program has successfully rehabbed, retrained and rehomed more than 230 horses. |

We also assist in cases of horse abuse, neglect and abandonment. We work to encourage owner responsibility and humane treatment and care of all equines and other animals.
Angel Haven Ranch & Rescues mission is to save as many unfortunate victims of the horse world as we humanly can. In some instances we have to purchase the horses to remove them from harms' way. To that end, we provide care for abused, abandoned, neglected, aged and unwanted horses or those horses that can no longer be cared for by their owners for whatever reason. We accept them in any condition and do everything in our power to provide needed care and veterinary services. Each horse placed into our care will have our full effort to ensure that it will never end up in a slaughter house or in a auction ring. We promise we are dedicated to providing only qualified homes with dedicated families for any horse in need.
Our goal is to make decisions that will help make the future for horses better than their past experiences. We want to be a hub of education in humane horse care and training methods, alternative therapies, horse rehabilitation and rescue. The only way to stop the suffering is to teach people better ways of caring for their horses. It is our goal to prevent this from occurring. Our organization's desire is to be a place for horses to become healthy and move on to have happy, productive lives and permanent loving homes. The ARL serves animals in need across the state, with a focus on Polk County and central Iowa. Animal welfare and protection for all species of domestic animals are central to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s mission—to promote animal welfare; encourage and strengthen the human/animal bond and prevent the overpopulation of pets.
The ARL is directly involved in many horse abuse/neglect cases each year; many of the cases have resulted in the ownership of the horses transferred by the court system to the ARL. In response to the increased need for care and rehabilitation for abused/neglected horses, the ARL, through a capital campaign, built and opened the doors in 2008 to the first and only statewide, year-round farm animal shelter in Iowa. The ARL Barn Buddy barn is an on-site facility at the ARL’s main location at 5452 NE 22nd Street in Des Moines, Iowa. This location houses a limited numbers of horses, goats, pot bellied pigs, sheep and poultry for rehabilitation and adoption.
In 2012, the ARL cared for over 18,500 animals. On any given day, the shelter has more than 650 animals in its care at its main facility and four satellite locations. The ARL is the only shelter in central Iowa that never turns away an animal in need, this results in a number of animals and people who depend on the ARL. |

The Equine Assisted Experiential Growth and Learning component (EAGAL) is our primary focus -utilizing horses. This program directly serves over 300 youth per year, 90% are low income. The Inter-Generational Assisted Learning (IGAL) component involves youth taking farm animals to visit elders living in facilities; it builds community between over 100 youth and hundreds of elder community members each year. ANT’s unconventional interventions provide a unique model for providing life-changing programs for difficult to reach youth as well as youth looking for experiential learning. Youth report that this natural environment is both fun, and empowering. ANT’s reputation as a valuable resource in the community has resulted in more requests for services every year, as well as requests for mentoring from duplicate programs springing up around the state. Just since 2009 ANT has increased the number of youth served by 40% each year.
ANT obtained 501(c)3 status in 2001. COLT opened another leg of it's program in North central Idaho in 2009 and this NC Idaho program has struggled to keep going due to the lack of donations by community. This shortfall is directly related to the economy of the program area, with a high unemployment rate and small town businesses being stretched to their community giving limit after giving to deeply-rooted school sports programs, rodeo clubs, and 4-H clubs. Our fundraisers are those of literally hundreds that go on in our 3 surrounding, rural communities and don't bring in enough to sustain the program costs. Healing with Horses Ranch Driven by a desire to provide the highest quality therapeutic riding experience to Central Texans, Healing with Horses Ranch was founded in July of 2011 by Patty D'Andrea, a PATH Intl Advanced Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and Certified Equine Specialist. Healing with Horses Ranch provides safe, affordable Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) to individuals with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges to promote healing and independence. It is a place where horses heal … body, mind, and soul! We don’t want to just touch lives, we want to change lives!
We incorporate a hands-on educational program that uses the interactions and developing relationships between horses and humans in an environment of learning and self-discovery. It is designed to promote personal growth and the development of positive social/life skills in a fun and supportive environment. Through a curriculum of activities designed to address individual goals and needs, each equine interaction is framed to help students learn and grow. The ranch environment naturally lends itself as a unique multi-sensory classroom.
| Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, Inc.
We, as a group of people, saw a need not being met in the
Tri-state area of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
We make an honest effort to do the best we can to save as many horses as we can in our area and give those horses a true chance at a better life.
We offer two types of primarily services to
help animals, mainly horses, in need:
#1 We bring horses into our rescue, get them on the path to
to a health, evaluate them and subject adopters to an application
process and the horses adopt on contracts.
The horses carry very reasonable adoption fees to help
off set their care while they were in rescue.
#2 We offer networking for horses either in
dire situations or with the potential to end up in
a bad situation. This is compromised of a shorter screening
process without a contract with their placement. | Heartland Horse Heroes Heartland Horse Heroes is a non-profit, 501c-3 PATH accredited therapeutic riding organization whose mission is to provide and support equestrian activities for individuals who have mental, physical, emotional, social challenges or learning disabling conditions. |
Hearts & Horses, Inc. Our mission at Hearts and Horses is to promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being of individuals with special needs through equine assisted activities and therapies.
Hearts and Horses is committed to excellence, not only in our own community, but also in the field of therapeutic horsemanship internationally. It is our goal to continuously provide our community with equine facilitated programs that are therapy-based and outcome-oriented.
Hearts and Horses is registering with ACTHA so that we can be added to a list of charities seeking funds. We are also interested in hosting a ACTHA ride which would allow us to raise funds and benefit 100% from the ride proceeds. | Hearts Desire Equine Rescue, Inc Heart's Desire Equine Rescue, Inc, established in 2003, serves horses, as well as people. We accept abused, neglected horses. and horses from owners with terminal illness or domestic violence situations who can no longer care for thier horses. We screen for only the best adopters, and often our facility is the forever home for unadoptable horses. We incorporate educational programs through schools to teach the proper care of horses and teach through public forums what is involved in truly giving our best to a horse. | HeartStrides Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship Program HeartStrides is a place where limitations are replaced with limitless possibilities, and the development of self-esteem is paired with the development of muscle tone. HeartStrides offers our land, our equipment, our horses, and most importantly our ideals.
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit program for horseback riders with disabilities and we offer our classes at Healing Hearts Ranch in Tumwater, WA. We are staffed by instructors who hold dual certifications with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Intl. (PATH) as well as Instructors of Riders with Disabilities (IRD) through the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). Our instructors are additionally certified as Level One Centered Riding Instructors.
We have a covered mounting ramp and arena. Our entire facility is set up for riders with special needs. We have a wonderful, gentle herd of therapy horses and lots of skill building activities.
We match each participant with a specialized team. This team includes a certified instructor, a Horse Handler, up to two Side Walkers, and a therapy horse.
Safety is paramount with all of our activities. All horse equipment and helmets are provided. Our volunteers are extensively trained to serve as Horse Handlers and Side Walkers. We also have a licensed Hippotherapist who provides evaluation and consultative services.
The cost to maintain our facility and operations is substantial and we strive to keep our cost low for our participants as well as offer as many scholarship opportunities as possible. Currently our operations are largely run by volunteers, including all administrative duties as the large majority of our income/donations currently go toward the care and upkeep of our herd/facilities as well as the maintenace of our scholarship fund. However, as you likely well know, equine and facility maintenance is costly and in order to continue operations we depend largely on funraising and donations. We are contacting ACTHA as we understand that you offer some fundraising opportunities and we are very interested in exploring these opportunities with you.
Thanks so much for your time and consideration.

Heaven Can Wait Equine Sanctuary for Healing and Learning Heaven Can Wait is committed to providing our rescued equine residents a safe haven where they do not starve, are not neglected, do not go without medical care, someplace where they are safe from abuse and from ever having to face great suffering and untimely death. We act on the belief that these noble animals, which we have relied on for so long for our own survival, deserve to live in comfort, safety and good health until their days are done.
Along with our commitment to continue the care of our rescued residents, is our commitment to provide the opportunity to educate children and adults about not only the enjoyment of owning an equine and the wonderful bond that can be created between humans and equines, but also about the responsibility, the knowledge, the costs, and the time that is required for such ownership. Only through education and awareness can we all improve the quality of life for all equines. Cruelty and neglect should never be acceptable options.
We also are committed to providing our equine-facilitated therapeutic activities that were developed to heal and educate a wide range of people facing many kinds of challenges. The magic of our equine residents is that they have found a way to forgive the bad inflicted upon them by humans in their pasts and are willing to give of themselves to the people who need non-judgmental and unconditional love to heal. It is truly inspirational to witness the resounding results of how our wonderful and happy equines help those in need.

Now in our 7th year of operation we not only run daily services from our ranch near Austin but also run regular 3 day camps in the hill country and train people in our method (Horse Boy Method) at satellite locations all over North America and also in Europe.
We very much believe in trail riding as central to our approach because the word autism itself derives from the greek word "auto" meaning the self - and the difficulty for the children is relating to the exterior world.
Trail riding takes these children straight into the exterior world without resistance, in a way that is delightful to them and which in almost all cases results in communication and speech.
It would be wonderful to team up with ACTHA not just for fundraising but also to find volunteers who are experienced and confident trail riders who might help us as volunteers when riding with children on the autism spectrum.
We would love to collaborate and if we did benefit from funds raised at the ride we would welcome members of ACTHA to come check out how we use trail riding in our daily work with these families and also to participate.

Jacobs' Ladder Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc. Jacobs' Ladder has been operating in Hahira, GA since 1999 & serves children who have special needs. | JASPER COUNTY COWBOY CHURCH Ride host who hosted event is sending us ride proceeds. NR. | Johns Hopkins University The Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Medicine is a world-renowned institution known for its efforts to find the leading treatments, cures and preventions for eye disease. Patients come to the Wilmer Eye Institute from all over the nation and the world to receive the finest ophthalmic care. What many may not realize is that world-class patient care is only one third of our mission. The other integral parts of Wilmer are innovative research and inspirational teaching. Without all three components, Wilmer would not be the model eye institute many consider it to be. Every day at Wilmer, a teacher’s observation inspires a student’s efforts in the laboratory. A scientist’s discovery culminates in a promising new therapy. A physician struggling to help a patient with a seemingly untreatable condition acquires an insight that leads to new research. This is academic medicine at its best—a creative, synergistic environment of clinic and operating room, classroom and laboratory. The impact of reduced National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding has created an increasingly bleak environment for young and senior investigators alike. With decreased insurance reimbursements, and reduced NIH funding, Wilmer depends on private philanthropy to ensure support for the leaders in academic ophthalmology.
It was recommended that the Wilmer Eye Institute register with ACTHA to raise awareness about our research efforts, specifically related to Retinitis Pigmentosa led by Dr. Hendrik Scholl.

Last Chance Corral `The Last Chance Corral is federally designated 501(c)3 non-profit equine rescue unit, specializing in the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of abused, neglected, misunderstood and unwanted horses. During the first six or seven months of the year we focus our efforts on rescuing and adopting out nurse-mare foals. These are orphaned foals, by-products of the race horse industry. This year we rescued 147 nurse mare foals, losing only two. We also rescue full-grown horses year round and this year so far we have rescued and re-homed 51 adult horses. We do all this on 2,65 acres, which is all paddock, no pasture. This means we must feed year round. Although we are federally designated, we are not federally funded and must rely upon the generosity of our kind supporters to cover the costs of medicine, hay, milk, grain, shavings, etc. During Foal Season, the cost of caring for and feeding the foals is about $800 per day. All the work here is done by a crew of five women; all except Victoria work part-time.
The Last Chance Corral's Mission Statement:
To alleviate the suffering and senseless slaughter of domestic equine. To provide an environment of rehabilitation and carefully select adoptive homes that are appropriate for each horse's individual needs and abilities. "When everyone else gives up on a horse, we will give it one last chance".

Morris Animal Foundation Since 1958, Morris Animal Foundation has been funding humane equine research. Some of our accomplishments include:
•Improving Equine Genetics: Launched in 2006, the Equine Health Initiative is the largest equine health campaign in Morris Animal Foundation’s history. The first project, the Equine Consortium for Genetic Research, has led to major insights into preventing and treating diseases with heritable risk factors. For example, researchers identified the genetic mutation that causes lavender foal syndrome and developed a simple, noninvasive test to detect adult carriers and foals afflicted with the syndrome.
•Advanced Veterinary Care: The Foundation has funded hundreds of studies that have led to significant breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment for serious health issues, including colic, laminitis, infectious disease and pain management in horse
Nutritional Management of Muscle Cramping: Funding over the past 20 years has led to better management of polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) through nutrition and exercise. The studies also determined that type 1 PSSM is genetic and primarily affects quarter horses, draft horses and warmbloods.
•Pain-relief Options for Horses: Several studies proved the pain-relieving effects of acupuncture and electroacupuncture. Another study developed a technique that uses catheters to alleviate pain in the equine forelimb and may be particularly beneficial in conditions such as laminitis. Researchers learned that a commonly used pain reliever impedes the intestinal repair process in horses that have undergone colic surgery, indicating that the drug should be used sparingly.
All of our studies have gone through a rigorous review by a voluteer scientific panel. This esnures only the best research is funded.

Because we have been funding this rescue solely from our own income for the past 6 years until the recent ACTHA rides, we would appreciate any other means of assistance that you could provide to the rescue.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

When they arrive at camp in the big tour bus and see all the people smiling and waving big signs with their names on them, when they are escorted to their beautifully decorated rooms and when they begin to see so many loving, caring adults willing to spend an entire week helping them have fun, it seems to put hope back into their eyes. Spirit's Promise Equine Rescue Program
I would to introduce myself, my name is Marisa Striano Charles. My husband Jeff and I have founded Spirit's Promise Equine Rescue Program. We rescue horses from around the country that are in need and repurpose them as healers and teachers. Horses are extremely empathic creatures and truly want to help their human counterparts. We are exclusively Equine Therapy. We do not ride or provide hippo therapy. Our focus is to teach about the value of the horse in our lives and in American History. Our mantra is "Where would we be without the horse?"
We are an advocate against the cruelty of horse slaughter. We at Spirit's Promise feel that education is the key. We provide an open air class room with 14 horses as teachers. We have two race horses. One of them is "Big Mommie", she is Seattle Slew's granddaughter. She was rescued from Camelot the "Auction Facility" in Cranbury New Jersey. There, she had bonded with Star Luna, that raced as Luna-Sea for one year and was sent to Slaughter because she was not fast enough. They screamed for each other across the lot and had to be rescued together. We have Jack, a quarter horse from Montana that came from a rolling 72 acres. He was taken from his mother at 8 months and then broke at 2. He was shipped across the United States and then put in a stall for up to 20 hours a day and only taken out to work. Subsequently, he kicked his trainer. His owner called us because he was no longer deemed safe. Jack is a 4 year old "big shot" quarter horse who loves to play with Pirate, a 6 year old quarter horse mustang mix. He also came from a farm, this one was in Washington state. The owner of his barn died of a heart attack and the children of this man did not want the horses. They sold them to slaughter. Pirate watched all the mares in his family get on a truck bound for a slaughter facility in Canada. When the truck came back for the Stallions, one of the drivers called and said there was a beautiful young horse on the truck that shouldn't go to slaughter. We received Pirate after he was gelded (neutered). As you might imagine, he was terrified and thought that his human counterparts were the most horrible predators he has ever run into. It has been three years and a lot of work, but Pirate is a trusting loving horse that loves to play with his buddy Jack. One of our more recent rescues was "Rex". He is a 20 year old Morgan with Cushings disease (basically diabetes in horses). His owner and rider was in a coma for the past 5 years. He was in the back yard of house where she lived. She had a brain aneurysm at 52 and was in a home for the last 5 years. Unfortunately, her husbands insurance ran our because he has an accident on his job and could no longer pay for the home that she was in. He had to take his wife home. They transformed the living room into a hospital room. We were called to come and get Rex because her husband could not afford any money or time to take care of Rex. Horses are herd animals and they need each other to thrive. Rex came to us and didn't understand the rules of being a horse in a herd. Our herd here is teaching him. We are working with him to trust again. We love what we do because we are the voice of the voiceless. We help the innocent and the innocent heal the wounded.
As I like to say to people, we have a kindergarten for 1500 pound children. They just want to please you and live their lives in peace, security and surrounded by love. We have an old west theme. A facade that we call "Town". This is our classroom where we teach. We just had a special needs class that came from Miller Place. It was one of the most rewarding days I have ever had. I take for granted everyone that comes here automatically knows about horses because it is the circle that I travel in. They do not. To see our horses through their eyes is truly magical. Autistic children that do not like to touch or be touched by anyone, brush our horses. It is beautiful to watch. I am 50 years old and I have done so much in my life. I feel that what ever I have done has lead me here to make a difference, if not the world then our little corner of it.
We are working with the Cancer survivors from Stony Brook Hospital Cancer Center. We have opened our ranch up to the cancer survivors, their families and especially their caretakers. The caretakers are the unsung heros of the fight against cancer. We are going to have an event here, we are working out the final details with everyone involved. Our horses are perfect for helping the cancer survivors and their care takers. They know, like the survivors what it is like to cheat death. It is a perfect marriage of healer and student.
I hope that you consider us as one of the Not For Profits on the East End that deserve to be recognized. We have a beautiful place here. We sell Peonies from our truck on our property on the side of the road. We bought the house and the barns with the peony field in the back of the horse barn. We farm over 20,000 Peonies during the month of May in to June. Living life surrounded by beauty and love is how we live. Please go to our website www.SpiritsPromiseRescue.org and please friend me on Facebook Marisa Striano Charles and like our page Spirit's Promise. Stamp Out Starvation Of Horses, Inc. Stamp Out Starvation of Horses, Inc. is a Georgia horse rescue and equine relief fund committed to improving the lives of horses across Georgia and keeping them safe, healthy and out of the horse slaughter pipeline. Our multi-faceted program assists horse owners who have fallen on hard times by providing short-term financial assistance.
We are not a traditional horse rescue, and consistently look for creative solutions to problems that negatively impact the equid population. S.O.S. believes that it is important to look at the big picture to make sure that we are not only saving lives, one horse at a time, but also finding ways to reduce the incidence of cruelty and neglect through the legal system.
SOS funds and sponsors gelding clinics to help make this important method of population control affordable. We maintain a hay bank, assist with farrier care and vet bills, when necessary, including euthanasia for horses too ill to be rehabilitated.
Our outreach programs include working with other Georgia rescues, networking to help owners re-home their horses when they can no longer care for them, holding gelding clinics and educating owners on healthy and safe horse care methods.
When we encounter situations of blatant negligence or abuse, we work to bring abusers to justice and enforce state and local equine and animal protection laws.

Sunrise Equine Rescue Sunrise Equine Rescue is located in Grapeview, Wa. We are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming the equines that we take in. We mostly rescue the horses, donkeys and minis that no one wants any more because of age or infirmity or a really bad living situation. We can not take in all the ones that people just can't afford any more, saddly.
We have several geriatric horses and a mini that still have value, but will probably be with us until they go to the big pasture in the sky. Others are perfectly adoptable.
Funding is always an issue, there never seems to be enough. By getting more exposure for our rescue and funding to help support them we can continue to do the work that so desperately needs doing.
We are a small but important part of the chain to help these horses in distress.
We hope to build the rescue so that we can incorporate theraputic interaction with the horses and provide more educational training for the potential horse owner.
All of these endeavors take money and right now we are just able to keep them fed, shod and vetted.
Thank you for your consideration.
Our website is under major reconstruction, but we can be found on facebook until then. Just search Sunrise Equine Rescue and you will find us.

K-9 Heroes, A Veteran by barbara snow
[email protected]
How many more names would be on that Wall?
Were it not for you – you heeded our country's call
You served and you bled thru all our war years
Many of you died with only a handler's tears
Your duties are many, you scent and you track
Your eyes tell me always, "I've got your back"
You rescue and save lives and when that’s in vain
You recover to bring closure to a family’s pain
You outsmart our enemies – it's you that they fear
You warn me when mines and explosives are near
You guard our beaches and borders and our Commander-in-Chief
Words “Stop, or I’ll release my dog” mean it’s over for a thief
Your eyes burned in Oklahoma City, your paws felt the flame
You brought me a small shoe – I moaned. “Oh God, No,” in pain
You comforted me for a moment; you nudged me on too
You knew we weren’t finished; we had more to do
You pull me to safety; you bring me a medic’s care
I open my eyes and know that you’re there
You have honor and spirit and feel our country’s pride
Sometimes in the night, only you knew I cried
I wish you had time to just run and play
Catch a Frisbee and swim – for a dog, a good day
But you are a Trooper, to duty you must
My life before yours - you give me that trust
No matter how clever an arsonist’s M. O.
Your nose tell investigators what they need to know
Some call you Coastie, you get “Semper Fi’’
The chute makes you perk – you love when we fly
As an Officer and Deputy, it’s crime that you fight
You wear the badge of the elite – “Guardians of the Night”
The love of a mascot knows no race, class or ranks
Privates, Admirals, Generals all give you their thanks
When you outlive me and Taps reaches your ears
You stand there with honor among bagpipes and tears
When your bones become old and you no longer serve
It’s medical care in retirement you earned and deserve.
Congress could pass a law to resolve this need
For all serving and in memory, for them I now plead
We must call you ‘Veteran’ for you are one too
No honor for me, if there is none for you
Till death do us part, this mantra rings true
They gave and give all for the Red White and Blue.

| Unwanted Horse Coalition The mission of the Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) is to reduce the number of unwanted horses and improve their welfare through education and the efforts of organizations committed to the health, safety and responsible care and disposition of these horses. The UHC grew out of the Unwanted Horse Summit, which was organized by the American Association of Equine Practitioners and held in conjunction with the American Horse Council’s annual meeting in Washington, DC in April 2005. The summit was held to bring key stakeholders together to start a dialogue on the unwanted horse in America. Its purpose was to develop consensus on the most effective way to work together to address to issue. In June 2006, the UHC was folded into the AHC and now operates under its auspices.
The UHC is under the direction of Ericka Caslin. The UHC currently has 30 member organizations working together to promote and serve the welfare of the horse. Through the UHC website, strong committees, educational materials (brochures, flyers, handbooks, surveys, and books) hands-on projects directly benefitting horses and horse owners, and a constant e-news summary the UHC’s mission continues to hold fast.
In 2013 we will continue to improve and build upon our current programs while brainstorming new ideas and forming new, important partnerships that will help the welfare of unwanted horses. We will also continue to educate the public about unwanted horses, owning responsibly, and breeding responsibly.
For questions about the UHC or how you can get involved, contact UHC Director, Ericka Caslin at [email protected] or call the office at 202-296-4031.
A Glimpse of the Unwanted Horse Coalition:
• The UHC’s Operation Gelding Program continues to be an industry role model for castration clinics and castration clinic grant programs. The program has aided in the castration of 771 stallions since its inception in September 2010. Thanks to donations from Zoetis, the AAEP Foundation, and the UHC the program has been able to fund over 60 clinics in 26 different states.
• The UHC is a partner in The Equine Network’s A Home for Every Horse program (AHFEH). AHFEH is a universal website where rescues may list their horses available for adoption. The service is free and available to all 501 (c)(3) registered facilities (www.ahomeforeveryhorse.com) The website was launched in November, 2011. Current program stats: more than 500 adoptable horses are currently listed on the website, (more than 2,500 adoptable horses listed since Jan 2012) and there are almost 500 rescues participating. AHFEH sponsor, Purina, gave each participating rescue 20 bags of free feed in 2012 and 2013. Weatherbeeta, another sponsor of AHFEH, has a special AHFEH blanket and donated over 250 of them to rescue horses in need. AHFEH Facebook page currently has 7,566 ‘likes’.
• The UHC and the American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA) joined forces in 2013 to help unwanted horses and equine care facilities. ACTHA and the UHC will orchestrate a dedicated effort to host as many competitive trail rides as possible for the benefit of the unwanted horse and our nation’s equine care facilities. ACTHA will donate funds raised from each ride hosted this year to the UHC and a local nonprofit equine rescue or care facility.
• The UHC is still distributing Dr. Jennifer Williams’ book How to Start and Run a Rescue. The book is $20, which includes shipping and all proceeds go to our Operation Gelding grant program. This book is an indispensable resource that offers practical and insightful advice to those who are interested in starting a rescue or those who may already have a rescue, but may need help improving upon their business. The book covers topics such as formation of a nonprofit, fundraising, public relations and marketing, networking, formulating policies, successful bookkeeping, and much more. Dr. Williams discusses the complex issues involved in founding a rescue, long-term management, and improving upon a currently existing rescue
• The UHC website (www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org) still provides information for horse owners and lovers alike. We currently have a list of over 700 facilities that accept horses listed on our site, all categorized by state. We also have a growing directory of resources for horse owners in need. We have lists of available grants, haybanks/feedbanks, castration clinics, vaccination programs, free equine classified websites, and more.
• The UHC’s National Speaker Program has been in operation since early 2009 with approximately 120 speakers in the database. This program provides equine events around the country with UHC volunteers to speak about the issue of unwanted horses and what it means to “Own Responsibly”. UHC provides speakers with UHC materials and a PowerPoint presentation.
• The UHC has published a handbook entitled Best Practices: How Your Organization Can Help Unwanted Horses. The handbook is part of the UHC’s continuing effort to get the horse community more involved in solving the problem of unwanted horses. The Best Practices Handbook outlines various examples of successful programs and activities already in place with other organizations. Many equine organizations, events and service providers have already instituted programs to help ensure that no horse becomes unwanted. The Best Practices Handbook lists many of these activities and other initiatives that those in the horse industry can undertake. The handbook includes sections on administration, continuing education, fundraising, support of equine care facilities, matchmaking, direct assistance, breeding control, and euthanasia.
• The UHC conducted and published the 2009 Unwanted Horses Survey. The study is the first of its kind to assess the causes and magnitude of the unwanted horse population in the United States. The survey was conducted from November 2008 to January 2009 by an independent market research company. More than 23,000 horse owners, equine industry stakeholders and non-horse owners participated. Results indicate that the problem of unwanted horses is perceived to be growing on many fronts. The economy is considered to be a significant contributor to the unwanted horse problem. The closing of the nation’s processing facilities, changes in breed demand/indiscriminate breeding, as well as the high costs of euthanasia and carcass disposal are also cited by respondents as major contributors. The survey is available in hard copy and is also available for download on the UHC website.
• On November 3, 2012, UHC Director, Ericka Caslin, went to Richmond, Virginia to judge the inaugural Rags to Riches Horse Rescue Competition at the Equine Extravaganza. Along with fellow judges Harry de Leyer, one of the most successful show jumpers and trainers in America, Elizabeth Letts, author of the book The Eighty Dollar Champion: Snowman, The Horse that Inspired a Nation, and Elizabeth Shatner, philanthropist for the All Glory project, Caslin saw ten rescue horses over the course of the day. These ten finalists were chosen out of many entries, based on video submissions received since July. The breeds showcased ranged from Quarter Horses, Paints, to off the track Thoroughbreds, a Percheron/TB cross, and Appaloosas. The event promoted rescue and adoption and also was an exciting event for participants and spectators.
• The UHC has a variety of materials at the public’s disposal from brochures and flyers, to surveys and handbooks. These materials are all available for free download on the UHC website. If you’d like any of these materials in hard copy, contact UHC director, Ericka Caslin at [email protected] or call the office at 202-296-4031.

It is the mission of Wings of Hope to provide quality equine-assisted activities to children and adults with disabilities.
History and Programs
Wings of Hope Equitherapy was founded in 1996 by two equestrienne ladies with a dream. In the past 17 years Wings of Hope has provided recreational, therapeutic horseback riding instruction to hundreds of children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
The four-beat gait of the horses simulates a person's natural walking gait. Thus, the horse's gait allows a person to use the same muscles they would if they could walk, and, the horse's movement provides much needed rhythmic and repetitive physical and sensory input. Children and adults with emotional and physical disabilities can improve their posture, muscle tone, coordination, balance, flexibility and motor skills through therapeutic horseback riding. Possibly the most important benefit is that of a positive psychological uplift. By experiencing the world from a different vantage point and by receiving new movement patterns and stimulating activities, many riders develop a more positive attitude and gain self confidence. Another benefit is the fellowship connection with the horse. For some of our riders, Wings of Hope is their only therapy because their families cannot afford other, more expensive therapies. |

Zuma's Rescue Ranch Zuma’s Rescue Ranch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that rescues abused, neglected, and slaughter-bound horses who are helping at-risk children in the Denver Metro Area through Equine Assisted Learning Programs.
Our mission: “Zuma's provides a place of sanctuary and healing for the voiceless humans and animals in the metro Denver region.”
Our History: In 2004, Paul and Jodi Messenich began a horse rescue operation out of their for-profit business, American Sport Horses. After witnessing the horrors of the slaughter industry, they decided to convert their multimillion-dollar business to what is now Zuma's Rescue Ranch. Through Zuma's Horse Rescue program, abused, neglected, and slaughter-bound horses were rescued, rehabilitated, retrained, and re-homed. In 2009, the board agreed to integrate the idea of pairing foster children with rescued horses. The program has since expanded to serve struggling children and families through experiential learning and therapy programs.
Today, Zuma’s Rescue Ranch retains a volunteer base of over 1,700 community members, serves over 50 at-risk children and family members per week, provides monthly public education classes regarding equine welfare, and is home to 42 rescued horses.
Zuma's Rescue Ranch is being registered with ACTHA to raise awareness about shelter/ rescue options and as a method of raising funds to support our programs and to continue saving lives.
